Recently, Dr. Vibe hosted a conversation in Toronto about the relationship between academic spaces and young Black men historically and how this has shaped their schooling narratives in Canadian elementary and secondary school systems as well as barriers to post secondary schooling and employment opportunities.
The panelists talked about:
– A discussion of some of the barriers that young Black male student face when wanting to go to post-secondary school
– Some of the deficits in the community and within the education system
– Teachers having low expectations of Black male students and a broken guidance system in secondary schools when it comes to Black male students
– The need for teachers interacting with young Black men and solutions to this issue
– Relationship between representation, post secondary access and educational attainment
