Dr. Larry J. Walker is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and mental health advocate. Previously Dr. Walker was selected as a Congressional Fellow with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) responsible for developing policy papers and working with Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) staff and members. After completing his fellowship Dr. Walker served as the Legislative Director for former Congressman Major R. Owens supervising the legislative staff and developing the Congressman’s legislative agenda. Recently, Dr. Walker moderated a discussion on Capitol Hill sponsored by the CBC and Committee on Education and the Workforce (minority) on the future of HBCUs. In addition, Dr. Walker has more than a decade of experience working in PreK-20 education settings. His research examines the impact environmental factors have on the academic performance and social emotional functioning of students. Specifically, Dr. Walker investigates how race, trauma and community stressors intersect in underserved communities.
Dr. Walker is the coauthor of a forthcoming book chapter titled, “A Dream Deferred: How Trauma Impacts the Academic Achievement of African-American Youth” and co-editor of a two volume set “How the Obama Presidency Changed the Political Landscape” (2017). Moreover, he wrote articles for Ebony.com and The Good Men Project on education, mental health, politics, race and social justice.
